Surprise Goodies Every Month! – Ipsy Bag Subscription

Subscription boxes have become a trendy new way to try out products and surprise yourself with a monthly gift box. I have seen my mom get her Fab Fit Fun box every quarter for the past year or so, but I decided it was time for me to try something out for myself, finally. I have my own reasons for trying out a subscription box, so I went with the Ipsy Bag instead. Lately, I have been wanting to find new products to liven up my skin and hair.

What is Ipsy?

Ipsy is a monthly beauty subscription box that sends you a personalized bag of hair, skincare, makeup, and other beauty products. The products are picked based off of your answers to a quiz regarding your skin tone/type, fragrance preferences, makeup color preferences and more. And, if any of your preferences change, you can retake the quiz and update anything as needed. There are a few different subscription options, but I chose the $10 per month plan, which includes five sample-sized items in a new makeup bag.

Why did I choose Ipsy?

Sometimes, I feel like I am a terrible girl because I have never been super into using a million hair and skincare products, lol. I have always loved doing face masks and wearing makeup, but I’m not sure what I am doing exactly. It usually just ends up with me kind of winging-it or using whatever is at the drugstore.

With Ipsy, this allows me to try out lots of new products for a fraction of the price. And once I find something that I love, I can purchase a full-size container. I can also update my preferences online so I don’t keep getting more products to try in that category.

My August Subscription Bag

The theme of August’s bag was “bare yourself”. Ipsy recommends using the products in this bag to “celebrate and highlight all the things you love (or are learning to love) about you”. I love that this is the theme of the month because I have always agreed that makeup should be used to enhance your features, not cover them up. And without further ado, here are the products from my August Ipsy Bag:

1. Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Curling Mascara in Black

2. Elizabeth Mott Thank Me Later Primer – Illuminating Primer

3. Biorace Pore Purifying Spirulina & Tea Tree Clay Mask

4. Luxie Beauty Periwinkle Blending Brush, 237

5. Papa Recipe Bombee Honey Moisture Cleansing Foam

Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Curling Mascara in Black

Review: This mascara actually really impressed me. It has a curved applicator and the color is very black, which is perfect for me. Usually, when I apply mascara, I use an eyelash primer first, then layer mascaras on top to get the length/volume that I desire. Although, with this, I was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t need any other mascara to layer on top and I didn’t even use a lash primer. I applied 2-3 coats to get the look I was going for and I loved it! It didn’t get clumpy with each new layer and seemed to dry quickly too. Although, I previously read reviews on this, which said it took a long time to dry, so maybe I was being extra cautious.

Elizabeth Mott Thank Me Later Primer – Illuminating Primer

Review: When I first squeezed a little bit of this out of the container, my face did a → :O. It really is an illuminating primer! It has a pearlescent effect to it, which almost made it look like a highlighter, but not that intense. When you put it on your skin, it gives you a very glowy look, which almost made me not want to put foundation on top. Even after I did, it leaves your skin with a very subtle glow and it’s perfect for an everyday look. I should also mention that a little bit goes a long way, so don’t waste it! By the end of my eight-hour workday, my makeup was still completely intact. Although, after a 45-minute workout on the treadmill, there were only traces of makeup left. I think the staying power through a workout will depend on how much you sweat too.

Biorace Pore Purifying Spirulina & Tea Tree Clay Mask

Review: My first impression of this face mask it was that it smelled good while applying it to my skin. You can definitely smell the tea tree oil in this, but it’s not too overwhelming. I was surprised when I noticed that there were exfoliating beads in the mask because I didn’t see any mention of that, but they were subtle. I left the mask on for about 10-15 minutes and then rinsed it off with lukewarm water. After patting my face dry, it felt very smooth and hydrated. Because it is only a sample size, I can’t give a long-term use review, but upon first use, I would recommend trying it out!

Luxie Beauty Periwinkle Blending Brush, 237

Review: Honestly, I was expecting more from this brush. Disclaimer: I’m no expert when it comes to my knowledge about makeup brushes. But, it seemed like kind of a flimsy brush and didn’t have a ton of bristles. However, when I used this to apply a darker eyeshadow to my crease/outer corner, it blended out very nicely. Overall, the brush did exactly what I needed it to, but it just felt a little cheap. It will get some bonus points for being cruelty-free though!

Papa Recipe Bombee Honey Moisture Cleansing Foam

Review: Using only a sample-sized supply of this makes it a bit difficult to review the long-term results of this cleanser. However, it is a creamy formula, which then becomes a foamy consistency when you lather it all over your face. After using it, I noticed that my skin not only felt cleaner, but my skin felt VERY moisturized. Many cleansers end up leaving my skin dried out and thirsty for a moisturizer, so this is rare compared to many of the cleansers that I’ve used in the past. With this, I felt like I didn’t even need to apply a moisturizer afterward.

Overall, I love my new subscription box, or bag, I suppose. The products aligned with my answers to the questions on the quiz, so it felt a little more personal. If you haven’t tried out a subscription box, I definitely recommend it and Ipsy is a great way to ease yourself in since it is only $10 a month!
